Winter may end in a snowy blast in many regions, but hold on to your hats! The updated 2024 Spring Weather Forecast favors an early spring with a few exceptions. Here is the seasonal temperature and precipitation outlook for March, April, and May—covering the U.S. and Canada.

Spring officially begins, of course, with the spring equinox, which arrives this year on March 19.

Spring 2024 Temperature Outlook

Spring as a whole has the potential to be warmer than normal across much of the U.S., with some exceptions:

  • Average temperatures are expected in the Appalachians, the Southwest, and Florida.
  • Expect below-normal temperatures in parts of the Upper Midwest, parts of Texas and Oklahoma, and the Intermountain region.

Don’t be surprised to experience pockets of chillier air across the mid-Atlantic, Appalachians, and the Rockies.

Spring 2024 Precipitation Outlook

  • Expect below-normal rain in late spring in the Lower Lakes, the Ohio Valley, the High Plains, and the Pacific Southwest.

Elsewhere, expect fairly normal to above-normal precipitation throughout much of the country, including Texas-Oklahoma.

Hopefully, by the time Easter arrives on March 31, we’ll have left all that wintery weather behind us!

Springtime in Canada

Canada will see above-average precipitation, except for near- to below-average amounts from British Columbia up into the Yukon.

Temperatures will largely be near or above normal, but the chill may hold on longer across the Northwest Territories.

March 2024 Highlights

You can expect above-average March temperatures along the East Coast (except for Florida), in the eastern Ohio Valley and Great Lakes, from the Deep South up into Texas and Oklahoma, on the West Coast, and in Alaska. Near- to below-average temperatures are largely anticipated elsewhere. Look for a warmer-than-normal month in most of Canada, except for southern Ontario, the eastern Prairies, and the Northwest Territories.

March will be pretty dry in much of the East; other areas should expect more rain than usual.

See the March 2024 Forecast page.

April 2024 Highlights

Overall, April temperatures will be warmer than normal from New England to Florida and westward across the Deep South into Texas, as well as north and west of the Pacific coast and in much of Alaska and eastern Hawaii. Elsewhere, temperatures will be near to below normal.

Conditions will be wetter than normal in the Southeast and from southern Florida across the Deep South into the southern Plains and northward across the Heartland and over much of Alaska. Elsewhere, precipitation will be near to below normal.

See the April 2024 Forecast page.

May 2024 Highlights

Overall, May looks to be warm across much of the eastern U.S., including the Great Lakes, eastern Ohio Valley, the South, East Coast, the West Coast of the U.S., and much of the Rockies. We do expect below-average temperatures from the Plains to the Upper Midwest.

We also expect a wet May (most likely thunderstorms). Near- to below-average rainfall is expected from the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley westward to the Upper Midwest and Heartland, as well as the northern Plains and northern Rockies. Wetter weather will be seen farther south from the southern Plains back through the Desert Southwest. The West Coast will generally be on the drier side.

See the May 2024 Forecast page.
