Question of the Day

I live in the Midwest and am interested in planting day lilies. What time of year should I plant them?
Spring or summer planting is fine. Plants must be watered deeply and kept well watered for a couple of weeks. Dig the soil deeply, adding well-rotted manure, leafmold, peat moss, or compost.

Advice of the Day

To avoid tears, put onions in the freezer for a few minutes before slicing.

Home Hint of the Day

In some areas, it’s illegal to burn brush. If you’re not going to dispose of brush once it’s cut, leave it where it falls. If you gather it into a pile, it won’t rot as quickly.

Word of the Day

Solar eclipse
Earth enters the shadow of the new Moon, which cuts off all or part of the Sun’s light. Total: Earth passes through the umbra (central dark part) of the Moon’s shadow, resulting in totality for observers within a narrow band on Earth. Annular: The Moon appears silhouetted against the Sun, with a ring of sunlight showing around it. Partial: The Moon blocks only part of the Sun.

Puzzle of the Day
